John Betts has been a mineral dealer since 1989 and is frequently seen at major mineral shows in the United States. Mr. Betts Website, wwww.johnbetts-fineminerals.com was one of the first mineral dealers on the Internet. When he is not working on shipping minerals around the world, he is out in the field, collecting minerals at new localities or trying to rediscover lost mineral localities. Mr. Betts formerly worked full time as design director for Henry Dreyfuss Associates in New York City, one of the oldest industrial designs firm in the USA. His work has received recognition from many worldwide publications. Business Week magazine featured Mr. Betts in an article about his award-winning design for the Polaroid Vision camera. In June 1991, the Japanese design magazine Fusion Planning selected Mr. Betts for their list of the top 50 designers in the USA. Mr. Betts holds over 75 domestic and international design patents. In December 2000, Mr. Betts resigned his position as design director to devote his full time and energy to selling minerals on the Internet. His training as a designer guides him as he selects aesthetic minerals from sources around the world. Mr. Betts has also authored many articles in the earth sciences. His article "Quarries and Minerals of the Dayton Rd. District, South Glastonbury, CT." won the 1996 George F. Kunz award for best article on New York regional mineralogy. This article was published in Rocks & Minerals magazine March-April 1999 issue. Another article, "Anthony's Nose, New York: Three Mineral Localities" was recently published in Matrix magazine and won the 1997 George F. Kunz award. His most recent contribution to mineral enthusiasts, the article "Digital Mineral Photography" (Rocks & Minerals Magazine, March-April 2001), is a point-by-point tutorial on using digital cameras to photograph mineral specimens. His contributions and willingness to share with other mineral collectors are evident in his Website where two-thirds of the content is education articles, field collecting locations or mineral photographs. As a result, Mr. Betts' Website was voted by mineralcollecting.org as the most diverse mineral website on the Internet with, "richly varying mineralogy / geology content that is always fresh and up-to-date and perpetually useful to others."
